This one-day birding tour offers a chance to spot a variety of birds, from vibrant bee-eaters to large raptors, all while enjoying the park’s stunning landscapes.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Morning: Arrival and Birding Safari
The day starts early with a drive to Tarangire National Park, known for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. But today, the focus is on birds. With binoculars ready, the search begins for some of the park’s star species like the Yellow-collared Lovebird, Ashy Starling, and the striking Von der Decken’s Hornbill. The Tarangire River attracts waterbirds, including herons, egrets, and storks, while the woodlands provide a home for colorful barbets and sunbirds.
Midday: Picnic Lunch in the Park
A break at a scenic picnic site offers a chance to relax while watching birds in their natural habitat. Martial Eagles often soar overhead, and if lucky, a Pygmy Falcon might be perched nearby. The lunch spot is also a great time to review the bird checklist and compare notes.
Afternoon: More Birding and Wildlife Viewing
The afternoon drive continues through different habitats, increasing the chances of spotting unique species. Raptors like the Bateleur Eagle and White-headed Vulture patrol the skies, while the dense bushes may reveal the elusive African Scops Owl. Before leaving the park, there’s time to enjoy the golden-hour light, perfect for capturing photos of birds and other wildlife.
Evening: Return Journey
As the sun sets, it’s time to head back, taking in the final views of Tarangire’s landscapes. The day ends with a collection of bird sightings, great memories, and perhaps a few new species added to the life list.
