Tour Overview

Ngorongoro Crater is a paradise for birdwatchers, home to over 500 bird species. From vibrant flamingos on the soda lakes to raptors soaring above the grasslands, this birding safari offers a chance to spot both resident and migratory species in one of Africa’s most unique ecosystems.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

06:00 AM – Depart from Arusha

Early morning drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey offers scenic views and occasional bird sightings along the way.

After park formalities, drive up to the crater rim, where the first birding stop takes place. Montane forest birds such as the African olive pigeon, golden-winged sunbird, and cinnamon-chested bee-eater are often seen here.

As the vehicle descends 600 meters into the crater, different habitats come into view, each attracting a variety of bird species. Keep an eye out for the kori bustard, secretary bird, and various lapwings on the open plains.

The soda lake inside the crater is a hotspot for waterbirds. Greater and lesser flamingos, yellow-billed storks, and various ducks gather here. African fish eagles and grey-crowned cranes are also common around the water’s edge.

Lunch is served at a scenic spot inside the crater, often with superb views of wildlife. While eating, smaller birds like superb starlings and rufous-tailed weavers may come close.

The grasslands and acacia woodlands host species like the augur buzzard, martial eagle, and spotted eagle-owl. The Lerai Forest is known for turacos, hornbills, and flycatchers.

The journey back up the crater rim allows for final birdwatching moments before heading back towards Arusha.
