Tanzania Weather

Tanzania’s weather differs from region to region – but there is always a great time to travel in Tanzania! Weather in the coastal areas is the hottest and most humid, while the North and highlands of Tanzania are cooler because of altitude. The temperatures vary between 22°C and 31 °C throughout the year. During the night, the temperature in Tanzania drops to between 10°C and 22°C. The beaches of Zanzibar have a distinctively tropical climate since it is located close to the Equator.

Tanzania weather: the seasons

Tanzania has two seasons yearly: the wet and the dry season. The wet season (also called the rainy season) runs from the end of October right through to December, and then again from the end of March to the beginning of June. They are referred to as the ‘short-’ and ‘long rains’. These tropical rains mostly start late afternoon and continue all night till early morning. The rains of Africa are famous worldwide and are a soothing, enchanting sight to behold during a trip to Tanzania!

Can I go on safari during the rainy season?

Did you know that National Geographic, Discovery and other major media companies choose the rainy season to shoot their wildlife documentaries in Tanzania? Tanzania’s weather is fantastic all year round and though heavy rains persist most afternoons in the rainy season, the natural environment comes to life. Nature is colourful, the grass is lush and green, beautiful flowers grow, animals find plenty of food, temperatures are nice and cool and, better yet, the main highlights of Tanzania are far less crowded with tourists.

Another benefit of travelling in rainy reason is the lower costs of safaris and accommodation during this low season. The disadvantages of travel during the wet season are that some accommodations are closed and the (sometimes) poor road conditions. Fortunately, this mainly concerns the roads in the national parks in South Tanzania.

For those travelling to Tanzania during the rainy season, the following national parks are open and ready for your visit. Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Lake Natron and Arusha National Park. The national parks of Tanzania that are better avoided during the wet season include Nyerere, Ruaha, Mikumi & Udzungwa. So if any of the latter destinations are on your must-do list in Tanzania, be sure to head out in the dry season.

How does Tanzania’s weather affect wildlife?

The rain makes for a lush landscape with a high concentration of animals. This means plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife at their finest – and happiest! During the rainy seasons, animals are more active which makes for a fantastic safari experience. With an abundance of food and fresh water, animals roam in their thousands. The rain also protects the animals from the harsh heat of the sun.

Many of our safari guests say that the rainy season offers a more intimate safari experience. For bird lovers, the rainy season is a fantastic time of year to visit Tanzania as lots of migratory birds arrive.

Tanzania Visa

Tanzania visa: Information and advice

If you book a safari in Tanzania or if you travel to Zanzibar, then you will need a Tanzania visa. But how to obtain this visa?

This article is a mine of information… Enjoy the read!

Important: we are not a visa purchasing service! The purpose of this article is solely to inform our clients. To begin with, read the article below, we hope it helps ! (If not, you can always contact visa purchasing services).

By travelling with African Landscape Adventures, you will naturally be guided by our team during the booking process.

Applying for a visa

To see what is more convenient, we broke down two methods of obtaining a Tanzanian visa. What are the pros and cons of each method? We have listed them in this article to help you make your decision.

Tanzania visa: How much does it cost?

To travel to Tanzania, you need a visa.

Are you British? The fee is £40 if applied in advance.

In Tanzania, it costs 50 dollars or 50 euros, which is quite surprising because 50 euros is worth more than 50 dollars. It is what it is! Therefore, when applying for a visa upon arrival in Tanzania, make sure to bring dollars with you, it will cost you less.

Are you a US citizen? Then you need a multiple entry visa and must pay US $100.

Online application:

If you wish to apply for a visa to Tanzania, you can do so online via this link https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/. This is the only official link from the Tanzanian government. Please note that since January 2nd 2020, visas can no longer be requested through embassies.

Apply for a visa upon arrival in Tanzania:

What happens if you want to apply for a visa locally? When you arrive at one of Tanzania’s airports, there is a specific counter you need to go to in order to apply for a visa, if you have not done so online before your trip. Applying is quite easy. The time it takes to obtain it depends entirely on the number of people at the airport. Even if you’re one of the first passengers to exit the plane and enter the airport, you still might have to queue for 20 minutes, depending on affluence.

It can sometimes take an hour, even when it’s not high season.

You should take this into consideration, especially if you are travelling in high season, because waiting for several hours to get your visa after such a long flight is never very pleasant.

Our advice:

Naturally, most people want to be organized in such a way as to avoid wasting any time upon arrival. We agree! Especially because most people travel in high season and you never know how many visas will be requested on the spot, so, best to be wise and not take any risk (especially when travelling with children).

Namely: If only one of the parents is travelling with her/his child, the other parent must provide a document which is written, in English, that he or she gives permission for the child’s trip. Finding this out is not practical if you have already arrived in Tanzania and need to get the document remotely.

We always send all the important information to our customers in the information pack to prepare for the trip, so you do not have to search for it yourself. On top of this, in order to obtain your Tanzania visa, your passport must still be valid for at least 6 months after your return date from Tanzania. So make sure to check your passport’s expiry date well in advance.

Be safe, apply for a Tanzania visa online before you leave!

PS: If you choose to apply for a visa in Tanzania, no problem!

However, we recommend that you read our information pack* to prepare for the trip and avoid any problems upon arrival.

Before you Safari

Before You Safari: Essential Preparations for Your African Landscape Adventures Experience.

Embarking on a safari with African Landscape Adventures is an exhilarating journey into the heart of nature’s grandeur. As you prepare to set foot in the wild, there are a few important steps to take to ensure your safari experience is not only memorable but also responsible and respectful to the environment and local communities. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get ready for your extraordinary adventure:

1. Research and Understand: Before you pack your bags, take the time to research your destination. Learn about the local culture, wildlife, and any specific guidelines set forth by conservation organizations. Understanding the ecosystem you’re entering enhances your connection to it.

2. Pack Light and Thoughtfully: Safaris require a balance between practicality and sustainability. Pack lightweight, eco-friendly clothing suitable for the climate. Remember essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, and a wide-brimmed hat. Opt for reusable water bottles and eco-friendly toiletries to minimize waste.

3. Consult with Experts: At African Landscape Adventures, our seasoned guides are a wealth of knowledge. Reach out to them before your trip to clarify any questions you may have, from wildlife behavior to responsible photography practices. Their insights will enrich your experience.

4. Respect Local Customs: Cultural sensitivity is paramount. Familiarize yourself with local customs, etiquette, and traditions. Interacting with local communities respectfully creates meaningful connections and contributes positively to the areas you visit.

5. Responsible Photography: Capturing the beauty of the wild is a thrilling part of your journey. However, remember that animals are the stars of the show. Follow ethical photography practices: maintain a safe distance, avoid flash photography, and always prioritize the animals’ welfare over the perfect shot.

6. Embrace Minimal Impact: As you explore breathtaking landscapes, remember to leave nothing behind but footprints. Follow the guidance of your guides, stick to designated paths, and avoid disturbing wildlife and vegetation. Minimize your impact to preserve these ecosystems for future generations.

7. Support Local Communities: Choose to shop locally and support the communities you encounter. Purchasing handcrafted souvenirs and engaging with local artisans contributes directly to their livelihoods. By giving back, you foster a sustainable cycle of positive impact.

8. Health and Safety: Consult a healthcare professional before your trip to ensure you’re up-to-date on vaccinations and prepared for the region’s health considerations. Additionally, make sure you’re covered by travel insurance which includes medical coverage and evacuation.

9. Stay Open-Minded: Nature is unpredictable, and safaris are no exception. Embrace the spontaneity of the experience, whether it’s a surprise wildlife sighting or a sudden weather change. Staying flexible and open-minded adds to the magic of your adventure.

10. Share Your Story: Your journey with African Landscape Adventures is an opportunity to inspire others. Share your experiences, photographs, and insights with friends and on social media. By spreading the message of responsible travel, you contribute to a collective effort towards conservation.

Final Thoughts: At African Landscape Adventures, our commitment to responsible and sustainable travel is unwavering. By adhering to these guidelines, you’re not only ensuring your own memorable safari experience but also actively participating in the protection of our planet’s most precious ecosystems and communities. Get ready to embark on a journey that will forever connect you to the wonders of the wild, leaving behind footprints of positive change.
